The SPO seeks opportunities to send musicians into area classrooms to introduce new ideas about music and to educate our youth in the performing arts. Interactive, dynamic and always fun, SPO Outreach performances bring soloists and ensembles to your school to play, demonstrate, educate and entertain. For more information.
Side-By-Side Program
In coordination with our Public School Outreach Concerts, area music teachers nominate high school students to participate in our Side-by-Side orchestra program. Selected students join the SPO in rehearsals and on stage at the high school performances that complement our season concerts. The SPO supports the interests and participation of young musicians to expand their enjoyment of and education in music.
Don Bushell Concerto Competition
The Bushell Concerto Competition is named in honor of the SPO’s first Music Director, Don Bushell, who started this annual event in 1946 to provide a performance opportunity for aspiring musicians. Every year since, this prestigious competition has provided professional development and an exclusive concert performance opportunity for outstanding area soloists.
The 2008 Bushell Concerto Competition is scheduled for Saturday, March 22, 2008 at Lakeside Upper School, McKay Memorial Chapel, 14050 1st Avenue NE, Seattle, WA 98125-3099.
The winner of the 2007 Bushell Concerto Competition is Patrick Austin, who will perform the Barber Violin Concerto with the SPO at the "Festive Finale" concert on Sunday, April 27, 2008, at Meany Hall on the UW Campus.
VIP Program
The SPO distributes special group rate tickets for each of our season concerts to qualifying retirement communities, underprivileged organizations, youth groups and special audiences. It is a joy and a privilege to share the gift of music in the continuing spirit of the SPO founders.
