Ensemble work: When in high school, a friend and I performed the Bach Double Violin Concerto for a recital at the old Moore Theatre in Seattle. Lots of fun!

Occupation / interests: Elementary classroom teacher, Junior High Music/Orchestra; Elementary Librarian. Retired.

Memories: Beginning on the violin was simply by chance, because there happened to be a violin teacher available at school when I was in the second grade at Redmond Elementary. I really don't remember him much more than that, but Esther Tye Smith (SPO Concert Master for 25 years) began teaching there a few years later and she is responsible for my enthusiasm for music and specifically the violin.

My mother was a self-taught pianist and supported my interest all the way. In the earliest years, the high notes especially hurt our dog's ears, so we'd put her outside, and my siblings often arranged to be elsewhere! I used a kitchen timer on top of the piano to keep track of the mandatory time for daily practice, and occasionally I'd move it ahead so I could go out and play sooner. I don't know who I thought I was fooling!

Other comments: After college graduation, I became busy with teaching, marriage and three children, during which, my violin didn't even come out of the case. In 1966, when Don Bushell was still the conductor, Esther Smith called me one day and said "Liz, dust off your violin and come play with the Philharmonic!" I did, I do, and I love it!
